They are all about left-wing mandolin orchestras. (Thanks to zingerella and eclecticmagpie for informing me of the links between anarchists, communists, and other labour activists and mandolin orchestras. I read all those labour history books and I had no idea.)

The topic of FBOW came up here at work and I seem to recall you mentioning that Johnston thinks women shouldn't have careers. Do you have a link to that?

Nope. frippy or someone at binky_betsy might know, though.

But as far as I know (and keep in mind that there is a huge gap between when I used to read it as a kid and when I developed an unhealthy obsession with Teh FOOB a few months ago), this theory derives from the idea that Johnson's characters are but thinly veiled cyphers for her own family and opinions. So if the "good" characters (and especially Elly) espouse such views, it's likely that Lynn holds them. And when a "bad" character, like Therese, gets trashed all over the place for wanting a career rather than children—yeah. Poor Therese.

OMG. That picture is perfect.

I can't believe it hasn't featured on greeting cards and inspirational posters so often that we all feel quite jaded about it. Oh well, our win.
