If you're calling to express sympathy, please limit your message to under ten seconds. If you're calling to invite us out, please send e-mail."

Of course:
a) Most of the phone calls aren't from people who read my LJ, nor are they people who really get my phone phobia.
b) As though I could figure out how to change the voicemail message.

I'm not the only one with a phone phobia? (Although mine might be closer to a "talking on the phone" phobia).

I get anxious when the phone rings or when I know I need to return a call or if someone keeps me on for awhile when I'm in a certain frame of mind. Or, the worst, when I'm talking to someone and call waiting beeps though. Ick.

I'm glad my phobia is shared, though. A lot of people find this quirk of mine irksome and befuddling.

I have a phone phobia, as do several of my friends. I HATEHATEHATE talking on the phone, for any reason, can't figure out why.

For me it's a few things:

• The disembodied voice factor, particularly when someone calls me up and expects me to know who they are without identifying themselves.
• The annoyance of having to be tied to a string for the length of the conversation with a regular phone.
• Having to either hold the phone or have it jammed uncomfortably between my shoulder and ear with any sort of phone.
• The sounds phones make when they ring.
• The idea that if I don't call the person back as soon as possible, even if I have no time, they'll hate me or think that I hate them.
• Thinking that it'll be bad news every time someone calls.

I don't know what to do with people who just call to "chat". I don't care much for small talk when we're face to face, and I hate feeling obligated to make it just because someone's called me to "chat". I'll tell you what's going on in my life, you tell me what's going on in yours, but if you live near me, I'd much rather you just come over and hang out than spend time "chatting" on the phone.

Maybe I'ma bitch.

Yeah; I don't mind it when people in other cities phone me up, because that's the most direct way to talk. But if you can meet me for coffee, meet me for coffee. Also, long-distance charges generally mean that I don't have five-hour-long phone calls with out-of-town friends.

I don't think it's owing entirely to assholishness. It's usually the people who aren't really into computers that fail to get the phone phobia thing.

I've responded to two telemarketers who asked me if "Mr. or Mrs. Sabotabby" were home with "They're dead." And neither offered condolences. They just said "okay" and hung up. I was so disappointed.
