Leftist Americans are pretty much alone on that one, mostly due to the young age and hodgepodge nature of the country, I suspect. Leftists elsewhere tend to be pretty freaking nationalist, or at least, they don't run around acting like they're embarrassed about their countries, anyway. You're never going to see anything as groan-inducing, for instance, as that "I'M SORRY WORLD" blogger campaign after the '04 election coming from Europe.
And when it comes to sports? Everybody's a nationalist.
I don't know about how people in the rest of the world manage it, but at least until you reach the centre right, patriotism's a fairly dirty word in the UK, with respect to the UK or England (Wales and Scotland are a different matter, and let's not even get into NI).
