Date: 2008-08-09 03:18 pm (UTC)I don't just turn off the radio when his show comes on, I hit the power bar, just to make sure some gremlin doesn't "accidentally" turn it back on.
Ahem. This probably belongs in my journal, not yours. Sorry about that.

Date: 2008-08-09 03:22 pm (UTC)huh? apparently people are surprised that all the Chinese people are not happy about the Olympics? someone attacked the parents of the US Volleyball coach this morning, then jumped off a tower.

Date: 2008-08-09 03:26 pm (UTC)I am also sick of hearing about the 2012 Olympics already, because they are going to fuck up London, and fuck around with Londoners, in order to hold them. My sympathy is therefore especially extended to the people of Beijing at such a time as the summer of 2008. It will strange to see whether the effects of holding the Olympics will be any different on a country which talks about its human rights record so much, but I'm not holding my breath.
(Although of course there's at least one silver lining: having the Olympics has persuaded them to pay for a new tube line at last, and some new high-speed intercity railways.)

Date: 2008-08-09 03:38 pm (UTC)That being said, I could do without a lot of things. At the top of the list is the way that Olympics seems to be synonymous with "America's chance to whoop everybody else's ass," i.e. the fact that the TV media doesn't even pretend to care about anybody other than USA! USA! USA! I remember watching the Olympics a few years ago and being into the idea of the medals ceremonies. Specifically, I really wanted Jamaica to win something because I was super curious to hear what their anthem sounded like (would it be all pomp and circumstance? Or would it be all laid back and reggae?) But then I realized: they only show medal ceremonies when America wins (and, ever so occasionally, Canada) -- the medal ceremonies on TV are all Star Spangled Banner all the time.
So I'm gonna go watch me some swimming, because I actually do find Dara Torres inspirational (a 41 year old swimmer beat the American record in the Olympic trials? Fuck yea!). But, in the larger sense, I feel ya.

Damn.
