I am already sick of hearing about the Olympics.

If it's a choice between the Olympics and five minutes of the smug, smarmy voice of fucking Seán Cullen, I'd take the Olympics year-round.

I don't just turn off the radio when his show comes on, I hit the power bar, just to make sure some gremlin doesn't "accidentally" turn it back on.

Ahem. This probably belongs in my journal, not yours. Sorry about that.

"reality has invaded the Olympics this morning"

huh? apparently people are surprised that all the Chinese people are not happy about the Olympics? someone attacked the parents of the US Volleyball coach this morning, then jumped off a tower.

The opening ceremony was very pretty, but sports are boring in any event... so yeah, I concur.

I was sick of it before it started.

I am also sick of hearing about the 2012 Olympics already, because they are going to fuck up London, and fuck around with Londoners, in order to hold them. My sympathy is therefore especially extended to the people of Beijing at such a time as the summer of 2008. It will strange to see whether the effects of holding the Olympics will be any different on a country which talks about its human rights record so much, but I'm not holding my breath.

(Although of course there's at least one silver lining: having the Olympics has persuaded them to pay for a new tube line at last, and some new high-speed intercity railways.)

Chicago is pretty similar: the City Council is finally starting to address sorely overdue transportation issues in its bid for the Olympics.

Yah, honestly I'd much rather be hearing a lot more about, I don't know, the war in the Caucasus.

It really is 1936 all over again....

I dig the Olympics because I dig swimming, and it's only once every four years that the mainstream media pretends to give a crap about my sport.

That being said, I could do without a lot of things. At the top of the list is the way that Olympics seems to be synonymous with "America's chance to whoop everybody else's ass," i.e. the fact that the TV media doesn't even pretend to care about anybody other than USA! USA! USA! I remember watching the Olympics a few years ago and being into the idea of the medals ceremonies. Specifically, I really wanted Jamaica to win something because I was super curious to hear what their anthem sounded like (would it be all pomp and circumstance? Or would it be all laid back and reggae?) But then I realized: they only show medal ceremonies when America wins (and, ever so occasionally, Canada) -- the medal ceremonies on TV are all Star Spangled Banner all the time.

So I'm gonna go watch me some swimming, because I actually do find Dara Torres inspirational (a 41 year old swimmer beat the American record in the Olympic trials? Fuck yea!). But, in the larger sense, I feel ya.

Jamaica's national anthem sounds like every other bloody country's national anthem ever, except possibly France's. Oh, and Russia's when it had the Internationale.

I feel this probably half-assed, probably not-new critique of the olympics brewing in my head. Um, ok, gross, that sounded way too much like my head opens up and you can make beer in it. No, but I just...everyone seems to LOVE the olympics and I need to formulate why I really do not love the olympics, just so I'll know I'm not just being contrary or still damaged by being four feet tall in elementary school in a state that loves basketball, etc.

Oh I forgot to mention the most bombastic thing ever said.

One of the commentators, I can't remember his name (and it isn't important), stated in response to the opening ceremonies that, "all superlatives have been exceeded."

Damn.
