nihilistic_kid posted a picture. Compare these portraits to English portraits of drunkards in the Edwardian era. Also, their website must be seen to be believed. If I didn't think I'd get in trouble for it, I'd totally show it to my students when I try (in vain, I might add) to teach them why you shouldn't tile a background image and then put red type over it.

It's amusing to poke fun of them, but expect to see more of this sort of thing. American political culture has been steeping in a higher-than-usual amount of crazy for some time now, and it's just beginning to come to a head.

I think drunks of the Edwardian era dressed classier than most sober people dress today. Because I'm superficial like that.

P.S. Have you've read a new book (as of this summer) called Blood Politics, it's about how white supremacists (the overt racialist ones, not the cover assholes in power) have slowly gone mainstream in American politics over the last thirty years. It basically cover how there were two wings, a mainstreamer one (think david duke and willis carto) and the more revolutionary, hardcore Tom Metzger/William Peirce wing have battled it out for the primacy of the movement.

Since Peirce's little empire fell apart, the mainstreamers have been winning out in that debate. A lot of these guys were active in the Minuteman anti-immigrant BS and a lot them have jumps on the Tea Party bandwagon.

My steampunk issues means that I'm attracted to more of those people than I feel comfortable admitting. But then, I like unusual faces.
