Week/end updates

• I'm going to be reviewing Luke Cage over at terror_scifi. I just posted the first review, and I'll try to keep it to a weekly schedule if school permits. Incidentally I'm only two and a half episodes in and trying to avoid spoilers, so if you binge-watched it this weekend, try to keep schtum, okay?

• It's been an epic time of concerts. There are more concerts than I can reasonably attend given that I have this annoying need to work for money and such, but I am still managing to hit a lot of concerts. Legendary Pink Dots last Tuesday, the Levellers on Friday, Billy Bragg next Tuesday, and Stiff Little Fingers, Tanya Tagaq, Peter Hook, and Dido and Aeneas all in the near future.

I can't stress enough how completely brilliant the Levellers were. I've never seen them live before, and they were just incredible. I ended up right at the front and danced for like two hours straight.

• Went to the big $15 and Fairness demo on Saturday. It was worth attending.

• I think the pedometer on my phone is fucked. It's seriously undercounting my steps compared to what I'm used to, except for at the Levellers show, where it thought I somehow walked 7000 steps during the time I was inside the Opera House. I checked all the things that it could possibly be and they were all functioning normally, which lead me to the conclusion that Apple wants me to buy a new phone but since I don't want to do that, Apple's going to end up with me buying a Fitbit instead.

I really wanted to watch luke cage. But cant. And i was into gang starr like 20 plus years ago, so im special. Lol.

(Every title of the luke cage episodes is the title of a gang starr song.)

Cant, because im at my girlfriend's house, and we dont want to waste our limited time watching 13 hours of a show she has zero interest in.

Fair enough. I pride myself on my incredible restraint for a) not watching it on Friday and going out and stuff, and b) not subsequently spending the rest of the weekend binge-watching it like apparently half the world did.

I am a significant part of the way into the first episode, and it is just people in a barbershop talking about sportsball. I think there might be two shows with the same name.

In the next episode, they talk about Langston Hughes.

However, must as this may not describe the general target audience for Marvel shows, a majority of men between the ages of 12-75 like sportsball, so if you have a bunch of male characters talking about a thing, it may be unrealistic to not have them talking about sportsball.

Ha! Swear jar. Kinda seems cliche to have a show with black characters start in a barbershop. But maybe it's a thing.

I think it's a combination of a thing (there is at least one such barbershop in my neighbourhood) and a convenient way of establishing setting and genre.

Also, if I as a writer wanted to introduce a whole bunch of characters at the same time and have them interact, having a major location where people tend to spend hours sitting around and talking would be awfully convenient.

Also also, a barbershop seems far less cliché and far more realistic than defence lawyers who only take innocent clients and refuse to get paid for it, or private detectives.

Ha! That's what us white folks do on TV. Plus, working in hospitals and being single fathers.

And a preternatural ability to solve crimes,if it weren't for the anti-social behavior, and maybe the person could avenge that event in the past.

And journalists. Given the decline of investigative journalism, I am always bemused by the overrepresentation of the profession on TV.

I desperately want more dramatic/genre shows where people have diverse jobs. Give me a guy who works at a call centre and accidentally crosses wires and lands smack in the middle of an espionage ring, or an X-Ray technician who discovers she doesn't need the X-Ray to see through walls, or a social worker who runs a support group for veterans of the Blood-Space War—just anything but another fucking cop.

Frank Whaley was in a film about a schmoe getting mixed with the Russian mob in post-Glasnost Moscow. He plays a cop in Luke Cage.

I tried to advocate this show about a teacher with cancer who starts making and selling crystal meth. Nobody was interested. "A teacher? The dad from Malcolm in the Middle? I'll pass!" Fools! (ironically, the lawyer on the show is the best part of the show, ha!)

Ah yes, but he's a realistic lawyer. That's why everyone loves him and wants to see a show about him even though the conclusion of that show is inevitable.

A lot of people dont know the luke cage history. It was 70s blaxploitation in the best way. He was a righteous brother who was framed by the man & went to jail. He got powers, and used those powers to make some money, and bring justice to the people. His best friend was a white guy who was a karate master who was dating a black female private eye who had a robot arm.
Cause, 70's Marvel.
